Prior Shows

We were approached by the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History to help with their historic tours of the Grove Street Cemetery.  With the support of over 30 volunteers from the community, the event was a  huge success and we look forward to producing these tours again in 2019.  Ranging from 9 years old to 67 years old, our actors braved the cold and rainy weekend wowing audiences on this historic walking tour.  Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for audition announcements for 2019!

We presented our first scripted show, Café Murder by Nathan Hartswick, as part of a special Valentine’s Day dinner at the 616 to a sold out crowd.  Patrons were treated to an interactive murder mystery comedy while enjoying a three course meal.  Directed by James Anderson.  Lighting & Sound by Leon Zimmermann III.  Set Construction by Leon Zimmermann III & Leon Zimmermann Jr.  Costumes by Kris Dodds Williams & Tamara Lucia.  Starring Matt Doss, Madalyn Martin, Liz Cervantes, Candice Raby, Linda Zimmermann, Kris Dodds Williams, Josh Lucia, Camron Beale, and Donté Johns.

​We presented our first youth production of James and the Giant Peach from the book by Roald Dahl, Dramatized by Richard R. George. Tickets to all three shows sold out and the kids put on an amazing performance. This show was Directed by Josh Lucia and starred: Arianna Cahill, Lucy Cross, Xavier Ehrhardt, Gwendolyn Goad, Emma Larking, Nick Longerbeam, Jude Lucia, Peyton Markham, Peyton Marsh, Kloe Marshall, Kamryn Moore, Jude Neal, Parker Norton, Belle Nunley, Maddie Oliver, Abe Timm, Anna Timm, Haan Vipperman, Carson Williams, Noah Williams, and Grace Wood. The amazing costumes were designed by Malcolm Hofmann and Rachel Timm.

We returned for our second year to produce Ghosts & Gravestones of Grove Street Cemetery to support the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.  Featuring some returning cast members as well as many new faces, this year’s show was directed by multiple talents and improved on many aspects of these historical ghost tours.  We return with more tours October 22-24, 2020!

A Christmas Tradition begins!  Sartomer Arkema sponsored our first production of “It’s a Wonderful Life:  A Live Radio Play” by Joe Landry.  Our cast and crew presented this timeless classic as a 1940’s radio show complete with live foley.  In addition to three regular shows, we also had a “Pay What You Can Night” with all proceeds benefitting the Danville Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk and we had a private sensory friendly performance for ADA individuals and children and adults on the Spectrum.  This show was directed by James Anderson and featured Matt Doss, Mark Harrelson, Josh Lucia, Olivia Richardson, Abe Timm, Rachel Timm, Kris Dodds Williams, and Linda Zimmermann with sets and props by Tamara Lucia and Leon Zimmermann III.  We will produce this show again December 10-13, 2020!

Smokestack returned for the third year to produce Ghosts & Gravestones in partnership with the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.  Due to smaller tour groups and  an outside setting we were able to present twelve tours while socially distanced.  Tickets sold out days before the first tours with over 240 people able to enjoy the event which featured new ghosts including Danville’s own Camilla Williams presented within the Museum’s exhibit about the Opera singer’s life.  The cast featured many younger actors along with experienced actors from the Region.   We look forward to more new ghosts in 2021.  Get your tickets early!

COVID-19 may have stopped some of our productions, but we were not going to miss presenting our 2nd annual production of “It’s a Wonderful Life:  A Live Radio Play” by Joe Landry.  Thanks to a sponsorship by Danville Toyota and support by the Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History our cast and crew performed for cameras and presented the show for free to the world on Broadway on Demand six different dates.  This show was directed by James Anderson and featured Matt Doss, Mark Harrelson, Josh Lucia, Olivia Richardson, Abe Timm, Rachel Timm, and Kris Dodds Williams, with sets and props by Tamara Lucia.  Stage Manager was Emily Wilkerson and Travis Williams assisted with sound.  The video production was provided by Lucia Video.  We look forward to performing this classic tradition in front of a live audience in December 2021 and plan to make this 2020 presentation available on-demand!

Our first show in front of a live audience since the pandemic was a fast paced, hilarious show compressing a history lesson on the American Revolution in under 40 minutes.  Directed by Matt Doss.  Starring local youth Denver Dalton, Izzy DelGiorno, Anna Dotterer, Avalyn Emerson, Jude Lucia, Connor McAllister, Ava Miller, Parker Norton, Maia Nunley, Maddie Oliver, Henry Owens, Ashlyn Rising, Riley Sanom, Anna Timm, Carson Williams, Noah Williams, and Lee Wyatt.

Smokestack returned for the third year with this annual tradition including a private performance for a local business, 4 performances for the general public, a special ADA/ASD performance, and a performance at 246 The Main in Brookneal, VA.  Directed by James Anderson.  Starring Michael Howard, Josh Lucia, Olivia Richardson, Kris Dodds Williams, Mark Harrelson, Abe Timm, and Belle Nunley. Stage Manager Emily Wilkerson, Music Director Leslie Blair, Choreographer Danya Zuniga, Lights Todd Blanton, and Costumes Rachel Timm.

After cutting the ribbon at 12pm on Thursday, July 7 Smokestack Theatre Company officially opened the doors at 319 Lynn Street for the first show of many to come in our new home!  Paying tribute to the beginnings of Smokestack, Director James Anderson chose this hilarious farce to open our theater in the Danville River District. Three of the founding members including James Anderson, Josh Lucia, and Mark Harrelson met at this very same show years prior with another local theater company.  The cast included Olivia Richardson, Steven Harders, Kris Dodds Williams, Josh Lucia, Robyn Harders, Mark Harrelson, Michelle Wilkerson, Jamil Winfield, Liz Cervantes, and Michael Howard.

Rachel Timm directed this Summerstack Youth Production featuring Ashlyn Rising, Anna Timm, Denver Dalton, Lorelei Zagol, Avalyn Emerson, Henry Owens, Kloe Marshall, Ava Miller, Sky Craft, Parker Norton, Connor McAllister, Noah Williams, Carson Williams, Edith Owens, Skylar Lucia, Maia Nunley, and Ash Perkins in the cast.  The show also included puppets brought to life by James Gill, Finn Holbrook, and Bee Phillips. Music Direction by Leslie Blair, Choreography by Emily Wilkerson, Costumes by Abe Timm, Puppets created by Anna Timm. Firebringer was Smokestack’s first musical , originally produced by StarKid Productions.

Returning for the 5th year, this was the largest cast to date. Some prior “Ghosts” returned along with new additions to the tours including a séance held by Averett Students, Robert J. Adams, and others. The tours sold out 2 weeks prior to the performances and additional tickets were added, selling out again within a few days. Josh Lucia wrote the show and directed it with the help of Assistant Director James Anderson and Stage Manager Emily Wilkerson. The tours will return in 2023, moving to Danville’s River District for the first time and including a special show on stage for patrons unable to walk the tours.

Based on the classic novel by Harper Lee, this show brought a cast of 19 to the Smokestack Stage. All 4 shows were SOLD OUT. Directed by James Anderson, Stage Manager Emily Wilkerson, Costumes Rachel Timm, PA’s Shannon Barker & Ashlyn Rising, Lights/Sound Josh Lucia. Based on the movie…based on the board game…CLUE was brought to our stage by a cast of 10 and featured a mobile door allowing these classic characters to visit each room on the board in our limited space as chaos unfolded. Our Summerstack Youth Production featured 22 children & youth portraying various versions of Grimm’s Fairy Tale characters within the world of popular television genres. Directed by Josh Lucia, Stage Manager Emily Wilkerson, Costumer Anna Timm, Set Construction Mark Harrelson, Charles Perkins, & Kris Dodds WIlliams, Set Painting Tamara Lucia, Technical Director Josh Lucia, Sound Operator John David Touart, Rehearsal Understudy Olivia Rickets. For our 6th year performing these historical walking tours, we moved them to the streets of Danville’s River District. New characters were written and performed, including the introduction of our “Headless Hobos” on stage. Based on Stephen King’s novel, this production featured many firsts including moving stage walls, exploding blood squibs, and live fire. Our 5th annual Christmas production featured most of the same cast with no official director. The finale included snow for the first time and front of house volunteers participating in the experience as costumed characters. Written by Steve Martin, a cast of 9 took the Smokestack stage for our season opener, bringing to life Pablo Picasso, Albert Einstein, and even the King himself!
